10 Questions with "The Captain"
My name is Steven Kernohan and I am Chief Whistleblower and annoying person here at BTR and i am going to profile a new member of our Trail Running Community every week just to find out all the important stuff about everyone!!!!!!
Time to meet one of our resident nut bags.....you might know him as his facebook alta ego 'Taking the Long Option'
Nickname.......G-man, George, Stanley, G, GRA, G-train... may have missed a couple
Country of Origin........England, but call Australia home now after being here for 15yrs.
Shoes of Choice......Trail: Hoka One One Stinson ATR
Road: Brooks Pure Cadence
Most Memorable Race.......I can't bring myself to pick one: - 2013 Two Bays 56km - I did this event in 2011 as my first ultra and first trail run, the start/finish was at Dromana instead of Cape Schanck so I knew what I was getting into but looking towards a quicker time with more experience on trails and with Arthurs Seat double hit close together in 2013. The lead up to 2Bays 2013 was the first time I'd followed a training program, for 3mths I hit every training run which consisted of 6 training runs per week with 2 weeks at peak training over 110km per week and it paid off; I loved every moment of the 56k's finished 8th overall in 4:52:45 - my best open race result. - 2013 Melbourne Marathon - 2hrs 59mins 8secs - lifetime goal of sub 3hr achieved. - 2013 Surf Coast Century - First 100km race... 44km further than I'd ever run before and went in with a calf injury but mentally strong and that's the key, this event proved to me that anything is possible as long as you want it enough. This event was life changing. - 2014 Kokoda Challenge - in team BTR, my first team event. The route was changed last minute due to bush fires which meant the route signing wasn't perfect so by the first checkpoint at 18km we'd covered 28km from getting lost, our Captain was in trouble shortly after with cramps and eventually was forced to withdraw, we also lost Dale due to a rolled ankle but picked up Brett at 66km and ran in most of the remainder of the event to end up covering 112km instead of what was meant to be 96km. Such an incredible event, a bloody tough event and I said just after the finish whilst drinking a cold beer never again as that's just crazy and not a run... I'm thinking I'll be back though.
Favourite Food......I simply just love food, but if I had to choose would be a juicy medium rare steak, chunky chips (crispy on the outside, soft on the inside) & salad washed down with a cold beer.
Bucket List Race.......Keen for an IronMAN event - Port Mac or Cairns as they're the closest ones but need to get back in the pool. Recently keen to go for another 100km run - either road (on the back of 63.6kms at Gold Coast Marathon) for a sub 9hr time or trail for the pure enjoyment of it.
Drink of Choice......Red wine, preferably a shiraz, cab sav or pinot noir depending on what I'm eating, beer, coffee, single malt scotch, water... pretty much in that order.
Favourite Trail or Race......Favourite trail area has to be Mt Coot-tha with the White Rock/Spring Mountain area a close second followed by Lake Manchester/Brisbane State Forest, so lucky to have these options a short drive away.
Must watch TV Shows.......Sport - Cricket, Rugby, Formula 1, Athletics, Swimming, Tennis (Grand Slams only). Trashy TV/movies drinking wine with my wife - The Voice, CSI, Person of Interest, Saturday night movies - generally sci-fi/action/comedy. With my boys - Thomas the Tank Engine/Fireman Sam.
If you could host a dinner party and invite any 5 people you'd like (dead or alive, fictional characters, anyone) who would it be.........Neil Armstrong, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jesus (not that I'm religious but it would be cool), Angelina Jolie, Leonardo da Vinci.
